A California Flooring Installer Went From Nowhere on the Map to the Top 3 on 9% of It

A flooring installer in Southern California. Showroom, good crews, ten five-star reviews, and a Google profile that may as well not have existed. We scanned 169 points across the service area on the day we started and the business came back at none of them, for any of the five terms we track. Eighteen weeks later it is in the top three at sixteen of those points and it shows up at all at ninety-five.

Not ranking badly. Not ranking at all.

There is a difference between sitting at fourteen and being absent, and it matters more than people think. Fourteen means Google knows who you are and hasn't picked you yet. Absent means you're not in the conversation, and no amount of good work on a job site fixes that on its own.

845 checks, 845 misses

Five search terms, 169 grid points each, scanned on the day we started. The business came back at none of them. Not buried on page three. Not returned at all.

Ten reviews, all five stars

The reputation was never the problem. It just had nothing to attach itself to, because nobody searching for flooring was being shown the profile in the first place.

Seventy-four views a month

January, the whole month, across Google Search and Maps together. That is about two people a day seeing this business exist anywhere on Google.

The same six miles, scanned twice, eighteen weeks apart

Each marker is a real place on the map. We stood at 169 points across the service area, about 6 miles corner to corner, and asked Google from each one who installs tile flooring. The number in the marker is where this business came back.

The southern half fills in. The northern half doesn't. That is not a flaw in the work, it is distance: the grid runs three miles out in every direction and Google weights how close you are very heavily in the map pack. The honest read is that this business now owns the ground around itself and is still invisible at the far edge. Sixteen points in the top three, forty-eight in the top ten, and seventy-four where it still does not come back at all.

Work carries on across dozens of other long-tail searches that this grid does not track.

Grid scans 27 March 2026 and 1 August 2026. 169 points, 0.5 miles apart. Rank shown is for "tile flooring installation". This grid covers one search term. We track five. Four of them moved and one, vinyl plank flooring installation, did not move at all. The view figures further down compare January to March against May to July, which is a different window, and we are not presenting the two as cause and effect.

No trick. The same work, every week, for eighteen weeks.

None of it is clever. It's the unglamorous part most profiles never get, because it has to happen every week whether anyone is watching or not.

72 posts to the profile

Roughly one every other day, written around the services and the towns that actually get searched. Not filler to keep a dashboard green.

35 photos, tagged and sized

Real job photos, named and geotagged properly instead of dumped in as camera-roll filenames.

20 questions answered

The ones homeowners type before they call. Cost, timeline, subfloor, whether you move the furniture.

12 review replies

Every one of the ten reviews on the profile now carries a reply in the owner's voice, and the later ones got a follow-up.

3 videos published

Short ones, to the profile and to YouTube, because video is one of the few things most competitors still won't bother with.

200 completed actions

Since March, and 119 of them in the last eighty-nine days alone. That is the engine underneath the map, and it looks like nothing from the outside.

What moved, and what did not

Visibility roughly doubled. We are going to be careful about what that does and does not mean, because the part underneath it has not caught up yet.

215 to 397 total Google views

January to March against May to July. Eighty-five percent more times the business was shown on Google Search or Maps. It is the only percentage on this page and it is the only one worth quoting.

12 to 57 mobile map views

Someone on a phone, in Maps, being shown this business. January against July. That is the surface that matters most for a trade.

Ten reviews, every one answered

Five stars across all ten. The most recent one landed seven weeks ago, which is a problem, and we name it below.

And what has not happened yet

Website clicks from the profile went down, not up. Fifteen of them in seven months, and fewer in the most recent month than the one before it. Calls are six in a hundred and twenty-one days, which is far too small a number for anyone to draw a line through, so we are not quoting it as a result. We are also not charting direction requests, because Google read exactly zero for January, February and March, and that is Google not reporting the metric yet rather than nobody asking for directions. Rankings and visibility moved a long way. The tapping-through hasn't followed yet. Anyone showing you a map like this without those sentences attached is selling you something.

All figures are from this business's own Google Business Profile and from geogrid scans run against Google's live results. Reporting periods are stated in full above.

One client's results over one period. Rankings, visibility and lead volume vary by trade, market, competition and season. Nothing here is a projection or a guarantee of what any other business will see.

The things worth asking about a page like this.

Because trade plus city often names a business outright, and our clients did not sign up to have their ranking history discussed in public. Trade plus state is as specific as we go. If you want to check any of it, ask on a call and we will walk you through the live dashboard.

It could be, which is why the numbers under each grid are raw cell counts rather than a percentage we picked. 0 of 169 and 16 of 169 are countable off the picture, and we show you the whole grid including the half that is still grey.

Distance. The grid runs three miles out in every direction and Google weights how close you are very heavily in the map pack. One location will almost never own an entire six-mile grid, and any agency showing you one that does is showing you a grid drawn tight around the front door.

Because it did, and you would find out anyway once you were a client. Rankings moved and views nearly doubled. Clicks through to the website went down over the same stretch. We would rather you heard that from us on a case study page than discovered it in month three.

It is about typical for a profile starting from nothing in a market that is not brutal. Denser city, older competitors, more reviews stacked above you, and it takes longer. We will tell you which one you are in before you sign anything.

Push reviews harder and earlier. Ten reviews is thin for a showroom trade, the last one landed seven weeks ago, and reviews feed both the ranking and the decision a homeowner makes when they are looking at three options. That is where this account goes next.
