What Is Claude Cowork? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

Claude Cowork is an AI assistant from Anthropic that does work for you instead of just talking to you about it. You give it a goal. It then works across the files on your computer and the tools your business already uses, and hands you finished work to check. Anthropic's own line is short: "Give it a goal, and it works across your files and tools." There is no separate subscription and no separate price. It comes with a paid Claude plan.

We set this up for small businesses, so this is written the way we explain it on a first call.

Chat is a conversation. Cowork is a delegation.

The fastest way to understand Cowork is to compare it with the normal Claude chat window. Anthropic explains the difference like this: "In regular chat, Claude responds to your messages but can't access your files directly. In Cowork, Claude has permission to read, edit, and create files in folders you specify."

Then they give the line worth remembering: "Chat is a conversation you steer turn by turn. Cowork is a delegation: you describe the goal, Claude works across your files and tools, and you come back to a finished result."

Conversation versus delegation. In a chat, you are still doing the work: paste something in, read the answer, copy it out, open the next tab. In Cowork you hand the job over, then check the result the way you would check work from someone new on your team.

How Claude Cowork works

Anthropic describes what it does like this:

• It "works directly in folders and tools you choose, and runs your task to deliver work for review".
• It "opens browsers for web tasks and takes over your screen only when it has to".
• It "shows each step: the files it opens, tools it uses, and choices it makes".
• It can run unattended, and it can be scheduled for tasks that come round every week or every month.
• It can handle several tasks at the same time.

Two matter most if you own the business. Showing each step is your audit trail: you see which file it opened and what it chose to do. Scheduling is the underrated one: a job that has to happen every Monday morning stops depending on you remembering it.

Who is actually in control

Anthropic is precise about this, so we will be too. Their wording: "Every task and workflow you run within Claude is initiated by you. You approve the plan first or, when you're ready, let it run end-to-end."

Read that carefully, because write-ups get it wrong in both directions.

• You start every task. It does not go looking for work on its own.
• By default, you see the plan and approve it before anything happens.
• Once you trust a job, you can let it run start to finish without approving each step. Anthropic offers that on purpose.

Approval first, with more independence available when you want it. Anyone telling you nothing ever runs unwatched is overstating it. Anyone telling you it runs loose is wrong the other way.

What Claude Cowork can do with your files and tools

Cowork only touches the folders you point it at. Inside those folders it can read files, change them and create new ones.

The tools side works through connectors. When Anthropic launched its Small Business plugin it named seven partner integrations: QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Claude's wider connector library adds tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar.

That combination is the point. A job that used to mean four browser tabs, two spreadsheet downloads and retyping numbers into a third file becomes one instruction.

What Claude Cowork is used for

Here is the most useful number Anthropic has published about Cowork. In a sample of sessions, roughly half of all usage was "the work around the work": the admin that surrounds a job rather than the job itself.

So half of what people hand over is not the skilled part. It is the chasing, the tidying, the formatting, the lifting of numbers out of one system and into another. It is the work nobody was hired to do and everybody ends up doing at nine at night.

The clearest examples come from the Small Business plugin. Five of its fifteen workflows:

• /monday-brief writes one page to start your week: cash, sales trend, pipeline, this week's calendar, and what most needs you today.
• /plan-payroll builds a 30-day cash forecast, ranks overdue invoices, and drafts a reminder for each one.
• /handle-complaint reads a customer email, looks up their order and history, and drafts a reply matched to the situation.
• /review-contract reads a contract and writes a plain-English summary, a red-flag list, and a marked-up redline.
• /close-month reconciles your books against your payment processor and writes the close packet for your accountant.

Claude for Small Business is a plugin inside Cowork

Claude Cowork is the product. Claude for Small Business is a plugin that installs inside it. Not a different app. Not a higher pricing tier. It costs nothing extra. Anthropic launched it on 13 May 2026, and inside the system it is called smb-complete.

The plugin adds fifteen ready-made workflows and fifteen underlying skills, built for the jobs a small business actually has: cash, invoices, tax, leads, campaigns, complaints, contracts and weekly briefs. Without it, Cowork is a capable general assistant that knows nothing about your trade. With it, it turns up already understanding what a month-end close is.

The web version is still rolling out, which means it reaches accounts in stages and yours may not have it yet.

Mobile is in beta, so it is real but unfinished. Anthropic has not confirmed whether every Small Business workflow runs there, so we will not tell you that it does. Build your setup around a computer and treat the phone as a bonus. What you can ignore is anyone calling Cowork desktop only. It is not.

Which plans include Claude Cowork, and what it costs

Anthropic's line is four words: Cowork "works with a paid plan". That means Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. The free plan does not include it. There is no Cowork price because there is no Cowork subscription. You pay for a Claude plan and Cowork comes with it. These are Anthropic's prices, from claude.com/pricing.

How to access Claude Cowork

1. Get on a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
2. Install the Claude desktop app.
3. Open Cowork.
4. Point it at a folder and give it a job.

Cowork and Claude Code are not the same thing

This is the most common mix-up in the subject. Claude Code is for software engineering: writing, debugging and shipping code, used by developers in a terminal or a code editor. Cowork is for everything else: research, analysis, documents and multi-step tasks, used by anyone whose job has admin wrapped around it.

They feel related because they are. Anthropic shipped Claude Code in 2025 for developers, and plenty of non-technical people started using it anyway, because it could do things rather than only answer questions. Cowork brought those abilities to the interface those people already used. If you do not write software, Cowork is the one you want.

What Claude Cowork is not good for

We sell setup, so of course we want you to like it. We also do not want you buying something that lets you down.

• Writing software. Use Claude Code. Cowork is built for the other kind of work.
• Anything on the free plan. There is no free Cowork. If you are not paying for Claude, this is not for you yet.
• Running your business from your phone. Mobile is a beta. It is not where you put a process you depend on.
• Fixing bad data. Our opinion, not Anthropic's. A forecast built on books nobody has reconciled since March is a tidy-looking wrong answer. Cowork reads what is there. It cannot know what should have been there.
• Making the final call. Look at what the workflows produce: a draft reply, a red-flag list, a close packet for your accountant. Drafts for a human to approve. Keep it that way for anything touching money, contracts or a customer.
• Zero effort. Installing takes a minute. Getting output you would act on takes connecting your tools and telling it how your business runs. An afternoon, not a click.

Is it worth it for a small business?

Here is the test we use with clients. Write down the weekly jobs nobody would ever pay you for: chasing the same three invoices, rebuilding the same sales summary, copying figures into a spreadsheet to see how the month is going. If that list runs past five items, Cowork earns back a $20 seat in the first week. If it is short, wait. Setting it up properly is the difference between a clever demo and something you still use in month three, and that is the part we do.

What is Claude Cowork used for?

Delegating multi-step work that involves your own files and tools: cash forecasts, invoice chasing, month-end close, lead lists, campaign assets, complaint replies, contract reviews and weekly briefs. Anthropic reports roughly half of sampled usage was "the work around the work".

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. It works with a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. There is no extra charge for Cowork itself, and none for the Small Business plugin either. You pay for the Claude seat, which starts at $17 a month on annual billing.

How do I get access to Claude Cowork?
