How to Set Up Claude for Small Business (Step-by-Step, 2026)

The full setup: the exact click path, which Claude plans work, what to connect first, and the first commands to run. Takes about 10 minutes.

Here is the short answer. Claude for Small Business is a plugin, not a separate app and not a separate subscription. You turn it on inside the Claude desktop app: open Cowork, click Customize in the left sidebar, go to Plugins, click +, find Small Business, and click Install. You need a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) and the desktop app. The install itself takes about two minutes. Making it genuinely useful takes closer to an hour.

We are ES Studios. We set this up for small businesses as a done-for-you service, so we have now walked this path more than once. Below is the whole thing in order, including the parts that trip people up.

What you need before you start

Four things. Check all four before you go looking for the install button, because three of the four are the reason most people cannot find it.

  • A paid Claude plan. Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Anthropic's own install tutorial says: "You'll need the Claude desktop app on a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan." The free plan will not do it.
  • The Claude desktop app. Not the website. This is the single most common blocker we see.
  • Cowork. This is the workspace inside Claude where the plugin lives. If you cannot see Cowork in the app, you cannot install the plugin yet.
  • Logins for the tools you want connected. Your accounting login, your email, your CRM. Have them to hand.

You do not need a new subscription, a sales call, a waiting list, or a download from a third-party site. If a page is asking you for any of those, it is not Anthropic's.

Step 1: Get on the right plan

Claude for Small Business costs nothing extra. It is included with a paid Claude plan. You are paying for the Claude seat, plus whatever business tools you already pay for.

Prices from claude.com/pricing:

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billing
Free$0$0
Pro$20/mo$17/mo
Max 5xfrom $100/moNot listed
Max 20xfrom $200/moNot listed
Team Standard$25/seat/mo$20/seat/mo
Team Premium$125/seat/mo$100/seat/mo
Enterprise (self-serve)$20/seat plus usageNot listed

Team is built for 2 to 150 people. Prices exclude tax and Anthropic can change them.

Our advice for a one-owner business: start on Pro at $20 a month. That is the cheapest plan that works, and you can move up later. Move to Team when more than one person needs their own login and you want shared settings.

Step 2: Install the desktop app and open Cowork

Download the Claude desktop app from claude.com and sign in with the same account that holds your paid plan. This is where people go wrong: they log into the website, cannot find Cowork, and assume the feature has not reached them yet. The website and the desktop app are not the same surface.

Once you are in the app, open Cowork. Give yourself five minutes to poke around. It looks like a chat window with a sidebar.

Step 3: Install the plugin (the exact click path)

This is the bit everyone searches for. Four clicks:

  1. In Cowork, click Customize in the left sidebar.
  2. Under Plugins, click +.
  3. Find Small Business in the list.
  4. Click Install.

That is the whole install. There is no file to download and nothing to configure yet. Internally the plugin is named smb-complete, which matters for the next step.

Step 4: Customise it for your business (do not skip this)

Straight after installing, type this into the Cowork chat, exactly as written:

Customize the "smb-complete" plugin for me based on my company.

Claude will then ask you questions about your business. Answer them properly. This is the difference between a tool that writes generic advice and one that knows you invoice on 30-day terms, that your busy season is May to September, and that your margin target is 42 percent.

Budget 20 to 30 minutes here. Skipping it is the number one reason people install the plugin, get bland output, and quietly stop opening it after a fortnight.

Step 5: Connect your tools, in this order

Anthropic's launch announcement names seven partner integrations: QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Claude's wider connector library also covers things like Slack, Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar.

Do not connect all of them on day one. Connect them in the order you will actually feel the benefit:

  1. Your accounting tool first. QuickBooks, if that is what you use. Cash and invoices are where the payback is fastest.
  2. Your email second. Gmail or Microsoft 365. This is what lets Claude chase overdue invoices and pull customer history.
  3. Your CRM third. HubSpot, if you have it. Skip if your CRM is a spreadsheet, and just upload the spreadsheet.
  4. Everything else later. Canva, DocuSign, PayPal, calendar. Add them when a specific job needs them.

Each connector takes two to five minutes to authorise. Doing all seven at once takes about half an hour and teaches you nothing, because you have not yet run a single job.

Step 6: Run your first three commands

The plugin works through slash commands. You type a slash, then the command name. Start with these three, in this order:

  • /monday-brief. Anthropic describes this as a "start-of-week snapshot of cash, sales, pipeline, and your top three to-dos". It is the best first run because it touches everything and shows you instantly whether your connections are working.
  • /plan-payroll. In Anthropic's words, this one is to "forecast cash and chase overdue invoices". If your accounting connector is live, this is where the plugin first earns its money.
  • /close-month. Anthropic describes this as "reconcile and write the P&L narrative". Save it for actual month end.

You can also just ask in plain English. Anthropic's own example is: Which invoices are overdue, and which ones should I follow up on first? You do not have to memorise commands to get value.

All 15 commands

CommandArea
/plan-payrollFinance
/month-heads-upFinance
/close-monthFinance
/price-checkFinance
/tax-prepFinance
/call-listSales
/sales-briefSales
/run-campaignMarketing
/handle-complaintCustomer service
/customer-pulse-checkCustomer service
/crm-cleanupSales ops
/review-contractOperations
/monday-briefOperations
/friday-briefOperations
/quarterly-reviewOperations

Underneath those sit 15 building-block skills that switch on by themselves when they are needed: cash-flow forecasting, margin analysis, lead triage, invoice chasing, contract review, customer sentiment, tax prep and a hiring packet builder among them. You do not call those directly.

How long it really takes

StageRealistic time
Sign up and install the desktop app10 minutes
Install the plugin2 minutes
Customise it for your business20 to 30 minutes
Connect your first two tools10 minutes
First useful outputSame day
Trusting it enough to run unattended2 to 4 weeks

That last row is the one nobody puts in a setup guide. Installing takes an afternoon at most. Getting to the point where you let it run a payroll forecast without reading every line takes a few weeks of watching it be right.

Does it do things without asking?

Anthropic's wording is: "Every task and workflow you run within Claude is initiated by you. You approve the plan first or, when you're ready, let it run end-to-end."

Read that carefully, because a lot of write-ups get it wrong in both directions. You start every job. By default you approve the plan before it runs. But running end-to-end, without stopping for approval at each step, is a real option Anthropic offers once you trust it. Approval is the default setting, not a permanent handcuff.

Five mistakes we see

  • Looking for a separate product. There is no "Claude for Small Business" signup page or app store download. It is a plugin inside Cowork.
  • Trying it in a browser. The desktop app is required.
  • Buying Team when Pro would do. Team is not required. A single owner on Pro at $20 a month gets the same plugin.
  • Skipping the customise prompt. Generic input gives generic output, and then people blame the tool.
  • Feeding it messy books. If QuickBooks has not been reconciled in four months, /close-month will confidently summarise four months of mess. Tidy the source first.

Common questions

Is Claude for Small Business free?

No, but it does not cost extra. The plugin itself is included with a paid Claude plan. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month if you pay annually). There is no separate charge for the plugin.

Do I need Claude Team?

No. It runs on Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Team makes sense when several people each need their own seat, not because the plugin demands it.

Can I use it on the Claude website instead of the app?

No. Anthropic's install guide says you need the Claude desktop app. If you are on the website, you will not see the Plugins option and you will assume the feature is missing.

How do I turn it on if I already pay for Claude Pro?

Open the desktop app, go to Cowork, click Customize, then Plugins, then +, find Small Business and click Install. Nothing to buy and nothing to download.

When was it released?

Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business on 13 May 2026. A workshop tour started the following day in Chicago, and a free online course called "AI Fluency for Small Business" opened at the same time.

What if I use Xero instead of QuickBooks?

Xero is not one of the seven partner integrations Anthropic named at launch. You can still work with Xero data by exporting reports and giving them to Claude, you just do not get the live connection that QuickBooks users get. Check Claude's connector list before assuming either way, since these lists change.

What does it actually do once it is running?

Fifteen slash commands covering finance, sales, marketing, customer service and operations, plus 15 background skills that switch on when relevant. In practice most owners live in three or four commands and ignore the rest, which is fine.

If you would rather not do it yourself

The install is easy. The setup that makes it worth having is not, because it depends on your numbers, your tools and your terms being described properly in step 4. That is the work we do for clients: we come in, connect the tools, customise the plugin around how the business actually runs, and hand back something that produces a useful Monday brief on day one rather than week six.

If you want to read Anthropic's own material first, the launch announcement and the install tutorial are both short and worth ten minutes.
